Over the last few weeks some of ChalkHill Systems clients have been attacked with the CryptoWall virus. This virus encrypts all your documents and files, making them unreadable. This type of virus is a ransom ware program. It will tell you that the only way to get your data back is to pay them the ransom. The criminals then claim to unlock your data, but the chances are that they will not unlock or they will release your data, but a little while late re in-crypt your files. Sadly there is no really way to remove it. If you get an email from say a delivery company informing you that your package is ready for delivery, be very careful about opening any links to the so called delivery company. Just come back from seeing a customer who rang concerned that her laptop had been 'hacked'. She was right. The Microsoft Support scam is currently doing the rounds but pleased to say I got it sorted in a couple of hours. She was delighted her laptop is now secure and she won't be caught out again.
